The Fellowship is pleased to present our discussion of the cultural impact of Seduction of the Innocent. This was a book written in 1954 by a prominent psychiatrist which was less than kind to the comics industry (to put it mildly). We talk about the Comics Code, EC Comics, censorship, weird Facebook ads, and a whole lot of other stuff. Plus our usual silliness, as well as our picks of the week.
Announcements:
Come hang out with us! We have monthly meetups on 2nd Saturdays in Garland, TX; details on Facebook & Twitter & the Events tab on our website
What we're up to this week:
Finished my big Tick book, and acquired a bunch more comics
Picked up too many comics, and tried to reorganize the "hoard"
Not much going on, just buying more comics
"A lot going on this week"; also next meetup is March 9 - check the website or the Facebook event for the venue change; this month we're at Wing City, and big thanks to Robbie for letting us hang out
Please note that this is not intended to be a review of the book itself. We're just talking about the history of the book's impact on the comics industry.
Note: the Code was upheld by all major publishers until Marvel dropped it in 2001. The last major publisher dropped in 2011, effectively ending the era of the Comics Code Authority.
Also, Les mentions Gaines; he's referring to Max Gaines, founder of EC Comics, and his son William, who took over when Max died in an accident.
Picks for the week of 3/6:
Fantastic Four #7 (Marvel)
Astro Hustle #1 (Dark Horse)
The Maxx 100-Page Giant (IDW)
